Have schools been too slow to take advantage of online recruitment advertising?
Paul Howells, Chief Executive, Eteach.com
Published:  16 April, 2009

Currently the DCSF estimates that £120 million is spent a year by UK schools on recruitment advertising and associated costs; in my opinion, this is £100 million too much.

Traditionally, all schools have recruited through national and local press and word-of-mouth. Whilst most other sectors have moved to advertising their vacancies online, saving millions of pounds in the process, the UK school sector is still paying too much for the dubious privilege of advertising on paper in a weekly supplement or in the local press.

Eteach changed the landscape in 2001 by providing a cost-effective advertising service to schools in England and Wales.

In Wales, 90% of schools now use Eteach, whilst in England only 28% have so far taken advantage of the lower cost online service. Why have welsh heads and LAs moved quickly to the online benefits?

It maybe because they have less budget anyway but the positive effects of moving to online means they have the lowest cost per hire for teacher recruitment in the UK.

Schools that move to online increasingly never need to use press advertising. Online recruitment is quicker, smarter, greener and more cost-effective. It is Eteach's commitment to schools to offer them a premium service that doesn't cost the earth.

One reason why schools in England have been slow to react is that the dominant player in the teacher recruitment advertising market place has been deliberately slow in delivering the efficiencies of the internet to its customers. It would have to jeopardise £65 million plus in revenues and £28 million in profits if it did so. Instead it has chosen to protect revenues, rather than act in the best interests of its customer.

Eteach was the first online recruitment vehicle for schools in the UK, now with over seven years of experience in building and delivering recruitment solutions. Our latest generation, "Eteach Premium" combines our award winning Job Board with a digital media service and class leading Applicant Tracking System (ATS). We will reduce schools' expenditure on recruitment advertising by harnessing the power of the internet to deliver quality candidates.

By switching to using the internet, schools could be saving thousands of pounds per year on recruitment advertising. There is no longer any need to rely on outdated paper based methods; the benefits of using the internet are there for all of us to see.

By committing to online and a paperless system we could release up to £100 million to be better used by schools.
